Na Língua – the zine for drinking Brazil is a publication created by BeberÚ that explores Brazil through its beverages. The project was made possible through the Fermenta 2025 grant program, sponsored by Ambev. It proposes a broader perspective on Brazilian drinking culture as a cultural, historical, and sensory expression.
The zine brings together original texts, essays, chronicles, illustrations, and photographs that engage with themes such as memory, territory, identity, hospitality, and the decolonization of taste. Its content weaves together diverse voices — journalists, researchers, artists, and beverage professionals — to reflect on what it means to “drink Brazil” today.
This first edition, features original contributions ranging from ancestral Indigenous beverages to contemporary drinking practices. It also explores subjects such as bar culture, taste formation, bureaucracy and legislation, alongside sensitive reflections on service, memory, and everyday life.
BeberÚ is a cultural and creative agency dedicated to promoting the gastronomy of Brazilian beverages. Through the perspectives of sommelier expertise, anthropology, and hospitality, the agency develops projects that explore contemporary drinking culture in depth, positioning flavor and aroma as essential elements of Brazilian identity, memory, and cultural expression.
About the name
The name BeberÚ reflects our understanding of sommelieria and hospitality as practices that create meaning around beverages as part of food culture and everyday life.
It combines the Portuguese verb beber (“to drink”) with ú, a term recorded by folklorist and anthropologist Luís da Câmara Cascudo. In his studies of Tupi languages, Cascudo notes that there was no distinction between eating and drinking, as both actions were expressed by the same verb, ú.
By bringing these two elements together, BeberÚ evokes a broader understanding of nourishment, taste, and conviviality, recognizing beverages not simply as products, but as cultural expressions that connect people, territories, memories, and ways of life.
